The Electoral Commission of Ghana has
rescheduled the District Level Elections in the Ashanti and Eastern regions scheduled
for today to Thursday, 21st December, 2023. In a press release
issued by the commission on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, it explained that the
reason for the rescheduling stems from technical challenges.
The Acting Head of Public Affairs,
Michael Boadu expressed regret on the commission’s behalf for any inconvenience
the new development may cause to the affected electoral areas, assuring the
public that the District Elections will proceed as planned on the rescheduled
date.
The Local Government Elections in Ghana
is taking place today across the country. Voters will elect assembly members
and unit committee members in the District Assembly and Unit Committee
elections respectively.
Ghana elects its District and Unit
committee representatives every four years.
Over 66,000 candidates are contesting for the assembly and unit committee positions according data from the Electoral Commission. The EC’s statistics further indicates there are 18,755 assembly member candidates and 47,502 unit committee member candidates, totaling 66,257 candidates.
The election spans 6,215 electoral areas across 216
metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies.
