6 Fascinating Facts and Figures you should know about the 2024 Comoros elections

The Comoros will be electing a new president on Sunday 14th, January, 2024. The incumbent, president Azali Assoumani is seeking re-election for a fourth term after he rose to power in 1999 through a military coup.

As Comorians prepare to exercise their franchise tomorrow, let’s take a look at some interesting facts and figures in this election.

1. Assoumani, who has served as the chair of the African Union for the past year, will face five competitors.

2. Since a 2018 referendum that changed the country’s electoral system, the president of Comoros is elected for a five-year term in a two-round system 2018. 

3. To be declared winner, a candidate must receive majority of the vote in the first round. However, if no candidate is able to pull majority of the votes in the first round, a second round of voting will happen on 25th February 2024.

4. The incumbent, President Azali has won presidential elections in 2002, 2016 and 2019. He came into the limelight by staging a coup d'état in 1999.

5. About 340,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the voting process.

6. Aside the presidential elections, Comorians will also be voting to elect their governors on January 14.
