2024 - 2024 General Elections (Ghana)
The 2024 General Elections in Ghana were held on 7th December 2024. A total of 18,772,809 registered voters participated in choosing the president and members of parliament across 276 constituencies.
A total of 13 presidential candidates, including four (4) independent candidates, were cleared by the Electoral Commission to contest the 2024 presidential election.
They were incumbent Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), the late Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana, Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party, and Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
The rest were Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC), and independent candidates Kofi Koranteng, George Twum-Barima-Adu, Nana Kwame Bediako, and Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen.
According to the Electoral Commission, voting would take place in 40,975 polling stations across the country, with 40,647 main polling stations and 328 special polling stations designated for specific voters, including security personnel and electoral officials.
The presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, passed away on 28th October 2024 at the age of 72. Her death led to a constitutional crisis; according to the Electoral Commission, the electoral laws were not clear on what should happen when a presidential candidate dies. The EC, however, allowed the GFP ten days to find a replacement for the late Akua Donkor. On 5th November 2024, the running mate of the GFP, Philip Appiah Kubi, filed nominations to replace his principal. On 12th November 2024, the Electoral Commission announced his disqualification, citing “errors” in his nomination forms.
Election Day
Polls opened at 7 am on December 7, 2024 and closed on 5 pm local time across 275 constituencies. The Electoral Commission reported a voter turnout of approximately 60.9%.
Voting took place in 40,975 polling stations nationwide, including 328 special polling stations designated for security personnel and electoral officials which was conducted earlier.
The electoral process was largely peaceful in most constituencies, though isolated incidents of violence occurred. In the Northern Region, police arrested four individuals in connection with a fatal shooting incident at Nyankpala.
Five regions experienced delays in poll openings, as reported by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO).
Vote counting began immediately after polls closed. Provisional results indicated a commanding lead for former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On December 8, 2024, Vice President Bawumia conceded defeat to former President Mahama, stating, "The data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively." He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and democratic integrity in Ghana.
