2020 - 2020 Ghana General Elections (Ghana)
As it does every four years, Ghana held its general elections on December 7, 2020, to elect a new president and members of parliament. The official presidential results were announced by the Chair of the Electoral Commission on December 9, 2020.
The 2020 general elections in Ghana resulted in an unprecedented outcome in the history of the 4th Republic. For the first time, neither of the two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured more parliamentary seats than the other. Both parties won 137 parliamentary seats, with one independent seat, leading to a hung parliament.
In the presidential race, the incumbent, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, faced 11 other candidates. The Chair of the Electoral Commission announced that Akufo-Addo secured 51.60% of the total valid votes cast, while his main competitor, John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, garnered 47.37%. The remaining ten candidates each secured less than 1% of the total valid votes cast.
The presidential election results were contested by the opposition NDC and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in court on December 30, 2020. However, the case was dismissed in March 2021, reaffirming Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
