2012 - 2012 Ghana General Elections (Ghana)
The 2012 General Elections was held on 7th December 2024 in Ghana to elect the country’s fifth President and members of the sixth Parliament. The ruling party at the time, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), nominated then-President John Dramani Mahama as their flagbearer.
Mahama, who had assumed the presidency after the death of President John Atta Mills, faced seven other candidates, including his main rival, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This was Akufo-Addo's second attempt at the presidency, following his defeat in the 2008 election.
The 2012 general elections saw a registered voter base of 14,158,890, with 11,246,982 votes cast. Of these, 10,995,262 were valid, while 251,720 votes were rejected. Turnout on voting day was 79.43% of registered voters.
Voting began on December 7th, but due to technical issues with the biometric machines, it was extended to December 8th to ensure that all eligible voters could cast their ballots. On the evening of December 8th, the Electoral Commission announced the results, declaring the incumbent, John Dramani Mahama, as the winner with 50.70% of the total valid votes. The opposition leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo received 47.74% of the valid votes cast.
The remaining six political parties, along with an independent candidate, each secured less than 1% of the total valid votes cast.
