Biography
Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremateng, born on October 3, 1955, is a prominent Ghanaian politician and corporate executive and an Independent Presidential Candidate for the Movement for Change.
He attended Adisadel College for his secondary education and later Achimota School for his sixth form. He graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Ghana and earned a law degree from the Ghana Law School. He is also a Hubert Humphrey fellow from the School of Management at the University of Minnesota in the United States.
Alan Kyeremateng served as Ghana's Minister for Trade and Industry from 2017 to 2023 and previously held the position of Ghana's Ambassador to the United States from 2001 to 2003 during the administration of President John Kufuor. He also served as Minister of Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development (PSD), and Presidential Special Initiatives (PSI) during John Kufuor's administration from 2003 to 2009 and was a trade advisor to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he coordinated the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) from 2009 to 2017.
Alan's early political career began as a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where he played a vital role in the party's decision-making processes, serving on its National Executive Committee from 1992 to 2001. He actively served on various committees of the party including the Finance Committee. He also chaired the Young Executive Forum, a youth advocacy group within the NPP at the time.
Alan first sought the NPP's presidential candidacy in 2007, finishing as the runner-up to Nana Akufo-Addo. He made subsequent attempts in 2010 and 2014 but was again unsuccessful in securing the party’s nomination.
On January 7, 2023, he resigned as Minister for Trade and Industry and announced his intention to contest the NPP's flagbearership. After placing third in the first round of voting in August 2023, Alan ultimately withdrew from the race and resigned from the NPP on September 25, 2023, to form an independent political movement called the Movement for Change, with aspirations to run for the presidency in the upcoming 2024 general elections. In September 2024, his candidacy was approved as an independent candidate.
