Zimbabwe: Mugabe, Tsvangirai and 3 others passed to contest Presidency
Incumbent president Robert Mugabe and current Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have been passed by Zimbabwe’s Nomination Court to contest the upcoming presidential elections slated for Wednesday 31 July, 2013.
In a statement contained in a Government Gazzete, a total of five Presidential candidates and a combined 871 National Assembly candidates will contest the 210 constituencies in the July 31 elections.
“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 106 of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2: 13), that at the close of the Nomination Court which sat on Friday, 28 June, 2013, the following candidates were nominated for election to the office of President -Mugabe Robert Gabriel (Zanu-PF), Dabengwa Dumiso (ZAPU), Tsvangirai Morgan (MDC-T), Ncube Welshman (MDC) and Mukwazhe Munodei Kisinoti (ZDP),” read the gazette.
The Gazzette also emphasized that harmonized elections will take place on Wednesday 31 July, 2013 from 7 am to 7 pm for the purpose of electing a person to the office of the President.
This is elections is viewed as crucial to bring to an end the four year uncomfortable power-sharing deal betwwn the ZANU-PF and the MDC.
