Ghana elections: Day 2, as official results trickle in

Voting resumed this morning in several polling stations across Ghana where national elections were suspended Friday evening following the breakdown of biometric verification equipment. The exercise officially opens at 7am and closes at 5pm.

Eight candidates are contesting the presidency, and provisional results from a number of constituencies so far have officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress and main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party claiming victory. The Electoral Commission has yet to release official results, contrary to previous elections that were followed immediately with official results.

The Commission suspended the exercise in the affected polling stations after long queues of voters waited their turn to vote Friday after polls officially came to a close.
A “no verification, no vote” rule agreed between the EC and the political parties to guide the conduct of the ballot had ensured that in places where the verification equipment broke down, the exercise was either held up for long periods pending a repair or a replacement, and in some other instances the equipment failed outright to validate the eligibility of a number of voters.

It is expected that most centres will report results far ahead of closing as the exercise had either been completed or was nearing completion until it was suspended.
