Legislative Voting Underway in Angola

Angolans head to the polls this morning as voting in Africa's second-largest oil producer began at 7:00am (0600 GMT), and expected to close 11 hours later.

Angolans will cast their ballots to elect 220 parliamentarians, with the leader of the winning party becoming president.

Meanwhile, today has been declared a national holiday for the 9.7 million registered voters to visit the more than 10,000 polling stations across a country twice the size of France.

Dos Santos' MPLA party holds 191 national assembly seats after it won 2008 elections in a landslide. UNITA, the biggest opposition party, won 10 percent of votes and 16 seats. UNITA is expected to pick up a few more votes from people who complain about a lack of good governance and an unequal spread of wealth characterizing the MPLA administration.

Initial results are expected within a day, with final results within next week.
