Presidential Elections in Somalia postponed as New Parliament sworn-in

Presidential elections which were scheduled to take place yesterday 20th August 2012 has been postponed by Somalia’s parliament on the basis that the country was not yet ready to hold the ballot.

According to lawmaker Aweys Qarni, "The election committee must still be convened and there is still work to be done before the presidential elections."

Meanwhile, the committee tasked with approving parliamentarians began swearing in 225 parliamentarians on Monday afternoon. The parliament will eventually have 275 members. Only then will it be able to hold crucial votes for speaker and president by secret ballot.

Running for the presidency were more than 20 candidates, including incumbent Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and Parliamentary Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden.

Somalia has not had a stable central government since the 1991 ouster of Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre which unleashed a bloody civil war and two decades of chaos.
