Congolese Labour Party Wins Majority in Legislative Elections

Final results from last weekend’s run-off legislative elections gave the ruling Congolese Labour Party of President Denis Sassou Nguesso a majority, gaining 89 of the 136 seats.

According to Interior Minister, Raymond Zephirin Mboulou, the ruling Congolese Labour Party (PCT) won additional 32 of the 67 seats during Sunday’s second round of elections.

Independent candidates close to the PCT won 12 seats, against seven for the allied Congolese Movement for Democracy and Integral Development (MCDDI) party.

The main opposition Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (UPADS) which held 11 seats in the outgoing legislature now has just seven seats.
