Run-Off voting underway in Congo

Second round of legislative elections began in Congo today 5th August, 2012 in about 70 constituencies where no candidate got a majority of the votes.

Results from the first round of voting on July 15 gave the president's party, Congolese Labour Party (PCT) a majority in parliament with more than 60 deputies. Opposition parties, Alliance for Republic and Democracy and Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (UPADS) had only secured two deputies in the 139 seat in parliament.

President Denis Sassou-Nguesso first ruled the country of some 4 million people from 1979 until a 1992 election defeat, and seized power again in 1997.

The National Assembly in Congo has been dominated by the ruling PCT Since 2002.
