Gambia: Voters Registration ends

The six-week nationwide voter registration ahead of the July 17th polls which started on Thursday 5th May ends today if the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) refuses to extend the exercise.

This is the first time the country is implementing the new biometric voter registration system.

Figures released by the IEC at the end of the 5th week (5th May-8th June, 2011) of the exercise revealed a total of 779,992 registered voters. Despite reports of the irregularities recorded in some areas, founding leader of the NRP in an interview with Freedom Radio in Gambia still described the registration as the best ever conducted in the country’s electoral history.

The last time such an exercise was held to rope in citizens 18 years and above into the electoral register was in 2001.

Meanwhile, President Yahya Jammeh during his registration to acquire his first ever biometric voters’ card has expressed confidence that he will score a landslide victory at the forthcoming presidential elections.
