African electoral stakeholders seek improved electoral practices

Stakeholders in election operations in Africa are searching for a common way of dealing with problems confronting electoral bodies in the region.

Africa Review reports that, over 70 participants from 25 countries across the continent are presently gathered in the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown, to discuss the challenges in the operations and planning of elections.

About 15 countries, according to the Electoral Institute for Sustainability of Democracy in Africa, are yet to hold elections out of about 30 scheduled for this year alone in Africa.

Electoral practices required a high sense of discipline and people involved in the process should wield the confidence of the voters, UN Secretary-General’s representative in Sierra Leone, Michael Von Schulenberg, told the opening of the three-day UNDP organised workshop on Wednesday.

It was organised under the auspices of the UNDP`s three-year Global Programme for Electoral Circle Support (GPECS) initiative, launched in 2009.

GPECS seeks to enhance the credibility, transparency, effectiveness and sustainability of electoral institutions and processes, with a particular emphasis on capacity development, all geared towards a greater democratic governance.

Host country Sierra Leone`s National Electoral Commission Chairperson, Christiana Thorp, sees the Freetown session as opportunity for experience-sharing beneficial to her country, which is gearing up for elections next year.
