DRC goes to the polls in November

DR Congo's Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has confirmed November 28 as the country's election date, for both the presidential and legislative elections.

This announcement was made by the chairman, Rev Daniel Ngoy Mulunda on behalf of the new electoral agency, to rebut accusations from some quarters of its unpreparedness to conduct the polls this year. He added that, the entire electoral process is expected to stretch till 2013 when the lowest level polls will be held.

Currently, CENI is updating the voter’s register in 11 provinces, to include citizens who just turned 18.

Officially President Joseph Kabila’s five-year mandate ends on December 6th but according to the electoral agenda, the swearing-in ceremony takes place by December 20, after the Supreme Court has analysed all the cases under dispute and officially published the results of the election.

According to the chairman, the provisional results of the presidential election will be published prior to the confirmation by the Supreme Court.

To become an MP in DRC, a candidate has to be at least 25 years of age, while the minimum for a presidential candidate is 40 years.
