Seychelles: Three-Days Voting Period Begins

The people of Seychelles, living in the outer islands have begun the voting process to elect a president for the next five years.

Due to the logistical challenges and distances related to the archipelagos, the outer islands will start voting from May 19th to tomorrow May 20th to allow to process to be completed on schedule. Saturday May 21 is the main Election Day and voting will take place in all of the country's 25 electoral areas from 7am to 7pm.

Incumbent James Michel  Parti Lepep, will be facing main opposition leader Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychelles National Party (SNP), Philippe Boullé as an independent candidate, Ralph Volcère of the New Democratic Party.

About 69,000 registered voters are expected to cast their votes to either maintain the mandate of resident Michel or call for change.

Michel has been in office since 2004 after replacing the People’s Party leader France Albert Rene, who came to power in a coup in 1977. Michel was then handed legitimate powers in the 2006 polls where he polled 53.7 percent of the vote against Ramkalawan’s 45.7 percent.
