#Mali2018: Polls have opened in Mali despite unstable security conditions

Polls have opened in about 23 thousand polling stations across the country where over 8million eligible voters are expected to decide between 24 candidates who will lead the country for the next 5years.

Despite the huge security concerns and the elections being held amid a rise in deadly attacks, voting atmosphere is calm with some voters turning up at dawn to exercise their franchise.

Local polls show the vote is too close to call for either of the two leading candidates – incumbent President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and opposition frontrunner Soumaila Cisse, and like in 2013, they are expected to face each other in a runoff.

Whoever wins the presidential race will be tasked with solving Mali’s dire economic situation and deal the insecurity problems in the country.

Polls will close at 6pm GMT.
