Gambia’s Capital Elects First Ever Female Mayor

Citizens in the Capital of The Gambia, Banjul have elected the country’s first ever female Mayor after the mayoral elections held Saturday 12 May 2018.
The Independent Electoral Commission confirmed this at the end of polls, which took place in Banjul and Kanifing areas. The new Mayor elect, Rohey Malick Lowe is the daughter of the late Malik Lowe, former mayor of Banjul.
She has background in international politics and a businesswoman and contested the elections on the ticket of the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP). She will occupy the seat for the next four years.
The Gambia’s Mayor Polls is the first ever to be held after the overthrow of former President Yahya Jammeh and it is seen as a concrete step in establishing the democratic credentials of The Gambia.
