#EgyptElections: Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi Secures Second Term
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has secured a second term in office after winning 97% of total valid votes in an election described as one-sided without any significant opposition.
The election featured only one opposition candidate Moussa Mostafa Moussa who had earlier on expressed his admiration for the Incumbent President Al-Sisi before partaking in the race with critics claiming he joined the presidential race to give it a semblance of legitimacy.
In all about 24 million out of the 59million registered voters participated in the elections representing 41% which is 6% less than the last elections held in 2014. According to the official results, The total number of spoilt ballots collated amounted to 1.8 million which is significantly higher than the number of votes accumulated by Moussa Mostafa Moussa, who came third with 656,534 votes representing 3% of total votes cast.
In the lead up to the presidential elections, opposition political parties and politicians had called for a boycott after many potential candidates dropped out or were arrested.
