#Salone18: NEC Dismisses Appeal for Opposition Leader’s Disqualification

Sierra Leone’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) has dismissed an appeal for the disqualification of Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, flagbearer of the Grand National Coalition (GNC), from running as a Presidential candidate in the country’s upcoming elections.

The appeal filed by Mr. Abu Bakarr Sankoh of the All People’s Congress (APC), sought to reverse the dismissal of his earlier petition for the disqualification of Dr. Yumkella by the NEC District Returning Officer for the Kambia District, where Dr. Yumkella registered as a voter. Mr. Sankoh alleged in his petition that Dr. Yumkella violated electoral laws by holding a dual citizenship at the time he registered.
