Liberia applauded for holding peace elections
The United Nations Security Council has lauded the government and people of Liberia including political leaders, civil society organizations and the media for the peaceful conduct of the December 26 runoff presidential election.
The Council also congratulated the President-elect, George Weah and the then candidate Vice President Joseph Boakai who contested him.
The members of the Security Council commended Liberia’s National Elections Commission, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the Government of Liberia for their preparation and execution of the runoff election and for their efforts to address the issues from the October 10 legislative and presidential elections, according to a UN release from New York.
The members encouraged the incoming Government of Liberia, and the United Nations, including UNMIL, to continue to coordinate closely on the transfer of responsibilities, taking into account UNMIL’s closure at the expiration of its final mandate extension on March 30, 2018, as set out in Resolution 2333 (2016).
