Zimbabwe: Former Vice-Prez to Lead Country Until 2018 Elections

Zimbabwe’s former vice president and governing party Zanu-PF’s favoured candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president on Wednesday or Thursday after the resignation of Robert Mugabe.

This was revealed by the party’s legal secretary, Patrick Chinamasa, on Tuesday.

Separately, Zanu-PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke said that Mnangagwa would be sworn in within 48 hours and that he would serve the remainder of Mugabe’s term until the next general elections, which must be held by September 2018.

Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe’s president on Tuesday‚ shortly after parliament began an impeachment process to end his nearly four decades of rule.
