RwandaElections: Kagame wins a third term in office
After tallying of votes from the Diaspora, and 30 districts concluded, the NEC Chairperson and Executive Secretary announced the final provisional results at a press conference on Saturday evening. Incumbent leader President Paul Kagame as expected won an overwhelming 98.63% of votes cast (6,650,722 votes). Far behind him was independent candidate Philipe Mpayimana, who gained 0.73% of votes cast (49,117 votes). Finally, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda gained 0.73% of votes cast (31,633 votes).
The presidential elections in Rwanda saw a voter turnout of 96% according to the National Electoral Commission (NEC). More than 6.6 million people voted, as compared to 5 million in the 2010 elections. 1.7 million Rwandans voted for the first time.
No candidates have raised any complaints about the election results.
Rwanda NEC has seven days to announce the final results, however they expect to make an official announcement by 8 August.
NEC Executive Secretary Charles Munyaneza expressed that the NEC was overall happy with the campaign and election process.
