Burundi: Coup attempt to delay elections

The presidency, on Sunday, conceded that the recent coup attempt could delay the elections slated for May and June.

Willy Nyamitwe, an aide to the president said the country’s electoral body "could decide to delay" the elections. There have been weeks of wide spread protests against the president’s bid to run for a third term which protesters believe goes against the constitution and the peace deal that ended the country's 12-year civil war in 2006. President Pierre Nkurunziza has refused to give up on his re-election bid despite incessant protests, an attempted coup and international pressure. Consequently, the EU and Belgium have already cut aid to his government ahead of election.

The parliamentary and presidential poll is scheduled for May 26 and June 26 respectively. The opposition, EU, US and Switzerland have called for a delay, but the government has rejected the appeal.
