Voting in Malawi's tripartite general elections enters third day extensions at some polling stations, as the poll got off to a slow start because of logistical problems. The government deployed the army to some areas on Tuesday to help monitor the election in which 11 candidates are vying to unseat President Joyce Banda, southern Africa's first female head of state, who came to power two years ago. There were chaotic scenes at some polling stations in the capital, Lilongwe, and the commercial hub of Blantyre, as voting materials failed to arrive or ballot papers were sent to the wrong end of the country making voters to go on rampage burning ballot boxes. Many polling stations did not open on time on Tuesday and there had been multiple reports of rigging across the city... ..Full Story

As Malawi nation moves closer to the 2014 tripartite elections, political analysts have predicted formation of electoral alliances between or among some key parties. This, they say is because, most of the major parties in the country do not have absolute majority, and going it alone in the polls would lead to a disastrous split of votes hence the idea of investing powers together . The President is expected to hit the region from January 8th to the 16th holding whistle stop tours in the region and mass rallies at some points. Deputy Minister of Finance Doctor Cornelius Mwalwanda has won the ruling Peoples Party primary elections for the volatile Karonga Central Constituency flooring long time rival former MP Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo by 165 votes. Mwalwanda amassed 6352 votes against Mwenifumboâs 6187 in the bitterly fought elections. Initially, the PPâs Returning Officers led by National organising Secretary Salim Bagus and Deputy Secretary General Irene Chikuni had declared Mwenifumbo the victor with 6584 against Mwalwandaâs 5936. But Mwalwanda protested prompting a re-calculation of the figures from each of the 15 centres. At a press conference held at Sumuka Inn Karonga Boma, Mwenifumbo conceded defeat and pledged to support Mwalwanda despite the fact that he had earlier refused the outcome citing a litany of flaws which ranged from intimidation of his supporters and disregard of the Partyâs code of conduct on elections by his rival. âThe people have spoken. I would like to congratulate my friend for the victory. And I will make sure that all my supporters rally behind Mwalwanda and President Joyce Banda in the 2014 elections,â he said. Mwenifumbo, who is also the Partyâs Provisional Chairperson for the north, also said he will not stand either as an independent candidate or quit PP. âIt is painful to lose but I have accepted it. I will advise my supporters to desist from engaging in violent acts because the victory for Mwalwanda is for the Party,â he said. While Mwalwanda said he was humbled by Mwenifumboâs gesture saying it is not easy to concede defeat. âI am grateful for what you have done. Lest work together. Winning does not mean that you are the best but means you are just lucky,â he said. Mwenifumbo once trounced Mwalwanda in the heavily contested DPP primaries in the run up to the 2009 general polls. But Mwalwanda stood as an Independent candidate and won. In July, 2013 Treasurer General Harry Mlekanjala Mkandawire told people in the constituency that âIf you make Mwenifumbo sail through at the primaries then as PPâs Treasurer General niti zenge na chithumba. Kweni phala munda chite iyvo chala nizengeko kuno chala,â Mkandawire said. AEP. ..Full Story
